New didactic document on the reburial of mosaics published by the GCI

The Getty Conservation Institute (GCI) has released The Reburial of Mosaics: Literature Review and Training and Planning Documents (2024), authored by Thomas Roby, John Stewart, Martha Demas, and Livia Alberti. The publication aims to enhance the conservation and protection of mosaic pavements through reburial practices.

  • Part I provides a comprehensive literature review on the evolution of mosaic reburial theories and practices since 1973, offering foundational insights into this sustainable conservation method.
  • Part II features training and planning documents developed during GCI’s field projects and courses since 2010. These resources, mostly published for the first time, cover all stages of reburial, including decision-making, design, planning, and guidelines for monitoring and maintenance. They also include practical forms to aid professionals such as archaeologists and conservators.

This dual focus on theoretical foundations and practical tools equips conservation practitioners with essential knowledge and methodologies for safeguarding mosaic heritage at archaeological sites. The publication is accessible on the GCI’s official website.
